Warhol Dervish

warhol_dervishWarhol Dervish is an unorthodox chamber music collective gathering together some of the most interesting and creative musicians in Canada and beyond its borders. For this concert, they’ll collaborate with the jaw-dropping line-up of Lukas Ligeti, Sam Shalabi, and Vergil Sharkya’, three of the world’s most renowned composer-improvisers  who transcend the boundaries of genre. This do-not-miss event will feature new music written by Ligeti, Shalabi and Sharkya’ specially for the occasion, as well as a healthy dose of improvised music created together with the exciting and eccentric Warhol Dervish.

Lukas Ligeti

Lukas Ligeti: We’re pleased to feature this internationally renowned composer-percussionist, whose commissions include Bang on a Can, the Vienna Festwochen, Ensemble Modern, Kronos Quartet, Colin Currie and Håkan Hardenberger, the American Composers Forum, New York University, ORF Austrian Broadcasting Company, Radio France, and more; he also regularly collaborates with choreographer Karole Armitage. Lukas works on numerous cross-cultural collaborations, which include projects (past and present) with musicians in Côte d’Ivoire, Zimbabwe, Burkina Faso, Uganda and Ghana.

Known for his non-conformity and diverse interests, Lukas Ligeti creates music ranging from the through-composed to the free-improvised, often exploring polyrhythmic/polytempo structures, non-tempered tunings, and non-western elements.

Vergil Sharkya

Vergil Sharkya’: Vergil is a well established composer/musician in the fields of improvised music, multimedia installations, post-modernist composition, scores and soundtracks for film, theatre and dance, composition and arrangements for orchestras, soundscapes, psychedelic noise rock, drum’n’bass, dub, and even academic research. Since moving to Montréal in July 2010, he has been working mainly (but not exclusively) in the field of improvised music.

Sam Shalabi

Sam ShalabiSam Shalabi: Sam Shalabi, known for his band, the Shalabi Effect (touring with such groups as Godspeed) has been a central pillar in both the free improv and post-rock scenes in Montreal. Recently relocating to Egypt, he returns to Montreal for this special event. His style ranges from freeform psychedelic rock to the most oddball abstract performance. Although mostly known as a guitarist, the highly versatile Shalabi also performs on oud and a variety of other instruments.
